Texts: John 3:16, Genesis 1:1-5, Exodus 3:14 and John 8:58

1. John 3:16 is known as “The Bible (or Gospel) in a verse.” After reading it, can you explain why this is so?

2. Read Exodus 3:14 and John 8:58. How does God describe God? Is there anything that “jumps out” at you in these verses?

3. If you watched “The Universe” video on Sunday during the message, how small did it make you feel? How big does it make God since He created it?

4. Why should we put God first in our lives? What are the dangers of not doing so?

Henry Moorhead. Preacher from 16 yrs old to 33 (died). Preached for Moody. Only used one verse the entire time he preached the gospel...John 3:16   And we’re only doing 5wks!

Gospel of John the apostle. Different from the first 3 gospels (synoptic) in that they follow a very similar pattern. John lived longer than the others and these are his words, looking back, as an apostle, one who was called, who

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. (NIV)

GOD
THE Verse and the Bible

John 3:16 - For “God”

Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.

But Who or What is God?

Artists and Hollywood Efforts

These shape so many people’s opinions or thoughts on God.

Let’s take a look at a few of them.

These shape so many people’s opinions or thoughts on God. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

anthropomorphism /ˌænθrəpəˈmɔːfɪzəm/

noun
1.  the attribution of human form or behaviour to a deity, animal, etc

FINITE trying to understand INFINITE

Our human minds are so finite and small that we need some frame of reference to even begin to think about God. As in Old Testament times we ascribe human attributes to an infinite, all knowing, all powerful, ever present God in order to have the beginning of comprehension. But God is so much bigger than what you or I can comprehend!

One might say this is why Jesus came to us in human form. He was literally God and human. God incarnate. God’s sacrifice to show us the way, to reconcile the relationship, to provide us with something tangible to lead the way. How awesome is that kind of love?

The Bible is how we know about God

Thousands of years old. It’s God’s word, God’s story, in print. How would we know about God, ourselves, His creation, His plan, Jesus, our need for salvation, eternity or heaven, without it?

Now there’s no way we can look at all the verses about God in the Bible. In fact we’re barely going to scratch the surface, but I would encourage you to read it yourself, in a translation that you can understand and that works for you. The Gospel of John is a great place to start. We have several great Bibles in the Harbor Bookshop in the Cafe.

Let’s look at a few of those verses today

Exodus 3:14 & John 8:58

God replied to Moses, “I Am Who I Am. Say this to the people of Israel: I Am has sent me to you.”

Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I Am!

Summary of “I AM” God is “I AM”

Omniscient (all knowing)
Omnipresent (everywhere)
Omnipotent (all powerful)
God has always been and always will be. God exists beyond time. God is the Creator of all things, including mankind. And there is so much more!!! Read your Bible to understand more!

John 4:23-24 (Jesus speaking)

But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

The Trinity in 60 seconds? Don’t think so. Jesus says here that God is Spirit. This is true.

But Jesus, also God, is there in the flesh. This is also true.
After Jesus ascended into Heaven, he said the Holy Spirit would be with us. This is also true. It’s the true, infinite God, and try as we might, our finite minds cannot fully comprehend it.
If we could, God would not be very big, would He?

Now for our second point as we move on. Ready?

You and I, We Are Not God

Since the beginning

We’ve had an inflated opinion of ourselves

Of our opinions
Of our influence and power   Our thoughts, feelings and lives center around what we think, what we feel, how important we are in comparison to

Of our opinions
Of our influence and power

Our thoughts, feelings and lives center around what we think, what we feel, how important we are in comparison to others.

Let me share a video with you that might help put us into perspective and also might help me make my point.

And God created all of it! How big do you feel now?

In this universe we are smaller than a grain of sand. We’re smaller than a speck on a grain of sand. We’re smaller than an atom in a speck on a grain of sand ... well, you get the picture.

But God
The God of the universe, your Creator, He loves you.

He knows your name. He knows how many hairs are on your head. You matter to Him.
He knows every single thing about you and loves you anyway.
The Great “I AM”, in some miraculous way, gives you significance. How does that sound to you?

Who or What Does Your Life Revolve Around? What’s at the Center?

So what now?
Ask yourself this question.

What is the most important thing in your life? What lies at the center?

Is it God or something else?
There are so many important things in life:

Relationships, spouses, children, parents, place to live, some possessions, hopes, dreams, careers, jobs. These are all important and valid.

I certainly don’t want to try and fill God’s spot in my wife’s life. I’m not up to the job (but I do like being a solid top 5). And then there are some ‘not important’ things: drugs, alcohol, egos & pride, bad relationships ...
We use the term “idol” fairly flippantly, but it symbolizes anything that is before God.

Idol /ˈaɪdəl/

noun
a material object, esp a carved image, that is worshipped as a god
(Christianity, Judaism) any being (other than the one God) to which divine honour is paid a person who is revered, admired, or highly loved

The Almighty God should be first
God says very clearly in the Bible that He should be first. He’s the Creator of the universe and of you and me, and He

holds eternity in His hand.

I think that’s more than fair, don’t you?

So what if you don’t believe in God?

Doesn’t affect God’s existence one bit

Not even a little. Your belief, or lack thereof, has absolutely no bearing on whether God exists or not, whether His story in the Bible is true or not, or whether He created all that you see.

On the other hand, it does affect you, doesn’t it? If it’s all true ... If He does love you ... If there is a purpose and a plan ... If there is eternity ...

I would encourage you to be open to the possibility and see what happens. God has the unique ability to meet you where you are.

Invitation to put God first. To leave other things here. To trust Him with all the rest.
